The internet was (slightly) abuzz yesterday after MTV premiered the new Best Coast video for “Our Deal.” The video was directed by Drew Barrymore and starred some fresh faces like Chloe Moretz (aka Hit-Girl), Tyler Posey (aka Teen Wolf), Shailene Woodley (aka pregnant American teenager), Miranda Cosgrove (aka iCarly), Donald Glover (aka Troy), and Alia Shawkat (aka Maeby Funke).
The video is an ode to your classic story of star crossed lovers and has influences from West Side Story, Romeo and Juliet, and The Outsiders. Chloe Moretz and Tyler Posey play the teenage lovers from rival “graffiti gangs,” as I’ve gathered from the MTV behind the scenes videos. Moretz is in the Night Creepers, who tag at night, and Posey is in the Day Trotters, who, yes, tag in the day.”Veronica” meets “Lucky” randomly after spying on the other gang with iCarly and they fall in love. Meanwhile, iCarly gets left behind and is promptly stomped and beaten by the Day Trotters. Maeby rescues iCarly and nursers her back to health, I guess. There’s a scene in which Maeby is giving a very intense looking pep talk to her gang. I have to admit it made me laugh a bit to see the same girl who asked where to find those t-shaped necklaces, yelling angrily at some thuggish dudes.
The best performance, though, would have to go to the teenage American pregnant girl, whose fist pounding upon seeing Maeby’s “Death to…” graffiti was simply perfection. Because when gang members get angry they frown slightly and punch their own hand. I swear, Donald Glover was side-eyeing her at that moment.
Anyway, the video actually is really sweet and I do like it a lot. “Our Deal” is probably my favorite song off of Best Coast’s “Crazy for You” album and I think this video is a nice match for BC’s song. It’s also kind of amazing to see how much Chloe Moretz has grown up in just a couple of years. Remember when she was Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s sassy sister in (500) Days of Summer? And now she’s hanging out on rooftops with teenage werewolves! She and Posey do make a cute couple, I must admit.
